Post Halloween
POST-HALLOWEEN 30" x 30” October 31, 2013
The geometry of stripes here within Post Halloween become more complex, where thin stripes alternate with fatter ones. Here, inspired by the “almost-black” color fields of Reinhardt that reveal color and shape upon gazing. Much like going into a dark room after being in sunlight. At first you are blind as you enter darkness, then the eyes adjust and things progressively reveal themselves.
The thin stripes vary the intensity of red—this red leaning toward orange. While the thick stripes are composed of a brush-stroke-filled black with hints of scarlet. I think of a city asleep after a Halloween celebration of bright costumes. When dark descends and a few colors remain—much like witnessing cinders at the end of a disintegrating fire.
